On a night full of offensive fireworks, it was a series of defensive plays that decided the victor between Manchester and Carroll Friday night.
Seth Hutton recorded two sacks and Austin Edwards one for the Mavericks on Carroll’s final possession of the game to preserve a 34-33 win after watching the Rebels recover an onside kick with two minutes left on the clock.
Prior to the onside kick and trio of sacks, Carroll had cut Manchester’s lead to one-point after Hayden Harrell scored his third touchdown of the night from six yards out.
Instead of kicking the extra point and taking the game into overtime, the Rebels elected to go for a two-point conversion. However, senior Jammie Jamison intercepted the pass on the two-point try that preserved Manchester’s lead. Two minutes later, the Mavericks were celebrating their fifth victory of the season and head coach Benny McLendon’s 100th career victory.
“Our boys didn’t play the best game they could. Carroll played a great game and was outstanding,” McLendon said. “We were really fortunate to win, but our kids weren’t going to be denied.”-------for the rest of the story see The Yazoo Herald printed edition or subscribe to the Digital Edition.----------
