Mavericks shutout by southern rivals

By TAYLOR MITCHELL
Sports Editor

FLORA - For the Mavericks of Manchester Academy, there may be no greater rival than the folks to the south, Tri-County, who is currently rated the top single A academy team in the state. When the two squads met in Flora last Friday, Manchester kept pace with the fast-moving Rebels.
However, despite forcing four turnovers in the first half, the Mavericks fell to Tri-County 27-0.
“I thought our kids played hard,” Manchester Academy head coach Benny McLendon said. “We just made some bad plays early on.
“Tri-County really took it to us.”
On the first play from scrimmage, the Rebels fumbled a simple hand off that would be recovered by sophomore William Peaster. The following play, Will Stonestreet connected with Jammie Jamison for a 17-yard play that brought the Mavericks’ fans to their feet. Unfortunately, that first drive ended with a pair of Stonestreet incomplete passes.
Lady luck remained with Manchester on Tri County’s ensuing possession that ended when Josh Peaster intercepted the Rebels’ pass at the Mavs’ 28-yard line. However, it would be déjà vu for Manchester, turning the ball over after just four plays. -------for the rest of the story see The Yazoo Herald printed edition or subscribe to the Digital Edition.----------
