Welcome to Yazoo City

Taylor MitchellTaylor MitchellAs a student at Delta Sate University and with family living in the Jackson area, I often found myself passing through Yazoo City but I didn’t know much about the town other than it was the beginning of the Mississippi delta.
In fact, I never even thought about what life would be like for myself in Yazoo City.
Now, though, as the sports editor of this historic newspaper, I am excited to begin a new chapter of my life at the Gateway to the Delta.
Although I’ve only been on the job for two weeks now, Yazoo has quickly become my favorite town in the delta and considering I was born and raised near Dallas, Texas, that’s saying something.
Since this is my first column for The Yazoo Herald, I’d like to use it as medium for you (the reader) to get to know me a little bit.
I recently graduated from Delta State with a degree in journalism and a minor in history this past summer. As I worked towards my degree, I spent those four years working at local newspapers in Cleveland, both as a simple writer and as a sports editor (twice). I also spent two years working for the school newspaper, The Delta Statement, including one year as the managing editor. I’ve won four awards during my time in Cleveland, one of which was for the best sports section.
As I mentioned before, I grew up in Arlington, Texas (roughly 25 miles west of Dallas) where I played football, baseball and even soccer for a couple of seasons. I first came to Mississippi July 2007 to attend Delta State, but my first visit to Yazoo City wouldn’t come for another year or so.
Now that I’m here, though, it’s time to get to work.
I hope to continue the successful sports department here and make it even better through game stories, features, columns and pictures. However, my ultimate goal is to make this sports section the best in the Magnolia State, even if that means lots of work and long nights in my near future.
But I’m not going to be able to do it all by myself. So, if you have a story idea, suggestion, picture or even a story already written, I’d love to hear from you.
I shouldn’t be too hard to find. Just look around the local sporting events. I’ll be the guy with the camera around my neck, paper and pens in my pocket and running around to make sure I get the best information and pictures for you.
