The Yazoo City High School tennis team had four of its members represent them at the State Tournament last week in Ridgeland.
No. 1 boy's doubles partners Thurston Robertson and Calvin Smith and No. 2 boy's doubles partners Bradley Lawyer and Jalen Grayer played Monday in the Class 5A individual state tournament at Ridgeland Tennis Center.
Robertson and Smith fell in the opening round to St. Martin's Brennan and Connor O'Keefe, 6-3, 6-2 while Lawyer and Grayer also lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 to Brookhaven's Braxton Hinton and Jacob Bozeman in the first round.
For Lawyer and Grayer, the loss was the first time the pair had been defeated this season.
"Once you get to the state tournament,” said head coach Joffre Washington, “The competition level takes a huge jump. You can't have an off day against anyone. Once you get yourself in a hole, it's extremely difficult to dig your way out and that's what happened to us. With that being said, I'm still proud of all four of them. They should be proud of what they have achieved this year."
