Yazoo City’s Mahone named 2011 baseball Player of the Year

Although Yazoo City’s overall record on the diamond wasn’t eye popping, their bats and at times their pitching really turned heads.
At 15-14, the Indians baseball team should have finished at least second in the district, instead had to settle for third before getting swept in the opening  round of the playoffs by Hernando. The Indians were one of four local teams to fall in the first round of the baseball playoffs.
Despite their early exit, Yazoo City put up great numbers across the board led by junior infielder and pitcher Demarcus Mahone.
“This was the best season we’ve played since I’ve been playing varsity,” Mahone said. He’s been swinging the bats since the seventh grade. “Everybody was on the same page, we were all working hard.”
Mahone would go on to hit .371 with 33 hits, six doubles, three triples and a pair of homeruns. He also batted home 16 RBI while scoring 31 times himself. He led the team with 15 steals on the bases.  On the mound, he finished third in the win column with a 3-4 record in 45.1 innings including 46 strikeouts in five complete games.
