MATTIE CURRIE
Mattie Gates Currie, 78, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the River Region Rehab Center in Vicksburg.
Funeral services are today at 11 a.m. at Mt. Vernon M.B. Church in Yazoo City with Rev. Steve Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Century Funeral Home.
Mrs. Currie was born May 14, 1932 in Carter to the late Flanders and Magnolia Gates. She attended Yazoo City Training School and graduated from Tougaloo College with a BS in Biology. She continued her education at Jackson State University and later earned a Master’s Degree from Mississippi College.
She taught biology at ND Taylor and Yazoo City High School until her retirement. She was a member of Mt. Vernon M.B. Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Currie; a daughter, Sherry L. Chatman; and a sister, Weliva Jamerson.
Survivors include her daughter, Yolanda Currie-Pope of Yazoo City; two sisters, Thelma Hicks and Lorraine Nells (James), both of Yazoo City; and four grandsons, Byron and Frankie Chatman of Natchez and Curtis and William Pope of Yazoo City.
NETTIE ELLZEY
Nettie Mae Ellzey, 97, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Oasis Health & Rehabilitation.
Funeral services were Friday at Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. R.B. McNeer officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ellzey was born Sept. 14, 1913 in Green County to Davis Andrew Rogers and Evie Mae Watkins Rogers. She was a homemaker and a member of Pass Road Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Ellzey; a daughter, Tommy Joyce Hammons; and a granddaughter, Karen G. Ellzey.
Survivors include a son, David Ellzey (Clara) of Bentonia; grandson, Kenneth David Ellzey of South Jordan, Utah; three granddaughters, Kimberly Ann Hommonda of Wiggins, Deniece Gibson of Wiggins and Pam Nault (Paul) of Pass Christian; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Bobby Jones, Lamar Chisolm, Trey Burton, Paul Nault, Mike Ellzey, David Chisolm and Johnny Gibson.
BERTHA GRAY
Funeral services for Bertha C. Gray, 43, are today at 11 a.m. at Old King Solomon M.B. Church with Rev. Benjamin Hall Jr. officiating.
Laird Funeral Home of Prentiss has been entrusted with arrangements.
Mrs. Gray was the fifth of seven children.
Survivors include her daughter, Joy Gray; grandson, Chandler Gray; four sisters; and two brothers.
YVONNE MORRIS
Yvonne Higgs Morris, 69, died Friday, March 11, 2011.
Funeral services were Tuesday at the Century Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg Robertson officiating.
Mrs. Morris was born Aug. 25, 1941 in Yazoo City to Henry and Bertha Higgs. She attended Yazoo Elementary and St. Francis High School. She later moved to Kansas City, where she lived for 40 years before returning to Yazoo.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Morris of Yazoo City; son, Raymond Morris of Yazoo City; three daughters, Karen M. Morris, Jennifer Morris and Deishe L. Morris, all of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
