District pursues upgrades

The Yazoo County School District is continuing its quest for technology excellence with a project called the Highway 49 Campus Fiber Backbone Project 2013.
Chase Caldwell, the school district's IT/Network Support representative, presented information that explained how the district could connect all facilities on the U.S. 49 campus with fiber optics to reduce cost and improve communication.
The project will cost $9,952.04.

Brianna McField was chosen as the Yazoo County High School Star Student of the year.
Scoring a 27 on her ACT, McField plans to enroll at Tougaloo College in the upcoming fall semester and major in Biology or Kinesiology.

McGinnis retires after over 30 years of service

From handling two natural disasters back to back to serving as a welcoming face for a multitude of local causes, Bernice McGinnis will be a tough act to follow.
The Yazoo County Emergency Manager retired last week after almost 34 years of service to the community.
“Helping people has been my biggest reward, especially in their time of need,” McGinnis said. “I hope to have a lasting impression that there is a need to prepare for a disaster in order to survive them.”
During her tenure, McGinnis could be found circulating information within the Yazoo community as severe weather approached. Preparation was her top priority when many would begin to panic with uncertainity and stress.

Yazoo woman killed in accident

A young mother died Saturday from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident along the interstate in Pearl.
Nikki Hood, 30, of Yazoo City was pronounced dead Saturday at the University Medical Center in Jackson.
“She died from massive internal injuries due to blunt force trauma from the wreck,” said Hinds County Coroner Sharon Stewart.
The accident occurred  during the early morning hours on March 1 in Pearl.
Hunter Street, the driver of the vehicle, remains in critical condition in the hospital. Street is also a Yazoo City native.

Bentonia crosses to be dedicated on March 16

The wait will soon be over for Yazoo County residents who have supported the efforts to construct new lighted crosses in Bentonia.
A dedication ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at the W.S. Red Hancock offices on U.S. Highway 49 to light the crosses.
Rev. D.J. Speckner, pastor of Bentonia Baptist Church, said that many Bentonia residents are excited about the project finally becoming a reality.
