Telephone scam artists are getting more creative by the day, but one Yazoo County resident almost fell victim to a truly elaborate ploy.
The resident, who did not wish to be identified, received a call from someone claiming to be her grandson.
“It sounded enough like him that I believed it really was him,” she said.

While no team from Yazoo City made it to the Mississippi Coliseum for the state  basketball championships this season, Yazoo City was well represented as two former athletes-turned-coaches led their respective teams to State Championships last week at the Big House.
Tangela Banks, head coach of the Forest Hill Lady Patriots, led her team to a gut-wrenching, four overtime 76-74 victory over Southaven in the Class 6A Finals, giving her a second straight gold ball.
In just his second season at the helm of the Velma Jackson Falcons, Anthony Carlyle coached his team to a come-from-behind 45-44 victory over Booneville in the Class 3A Finals for his first championship.

No specific names were mentioned in Tuesday's Public Service Commission (PSC) board meeting, but it appears Yazoo City is still in the running for a “major retailer.”
When PSC Chairman Wardell Leach questioned PSC engineer Wayne Morrison about progress on “contact with the retailer,” Morrison said he contacted “them yesterday (Monday), and they're still working on their side of the plans.”
Morrison added that the retailer is waiting for the city to get the right-of-way for the Willie Morris Parkway. Local officials are not able to identify the business in question due to confidentiality agreements.
Just prior to Leach's question, Morrison said he continues to work on acquiring rights-of-way for the parkway.
