Yazoo County hit hard by Saturday storm

From Whites Lane to Renshaw, many Yazooans were picking up the pieces after a strong storm system passed through Saturday evening.
Countless trees were toppled, homes were damaged and many residents were left without power.
At the Farm Bureau office on Washington Street, a flag pole was bent to the ground. Along Main Street, several buildings sustained roof damage.
Several large trees were broken along Grand Avenue. The top of a tree landed on a van near Canal Street.

City schools accreditation to be downgraded

Following an audit of the Yazoo City Municipal School District last October, the state Commission on School Accreditation will take action next week on a recommendation to downgrade the district's accreditation from “accredited” to “probation” for the 2012-2013 school year.
The recommendation is based on state education officials' findings during an unannounced, on-site visit Oct. 15-17.
In a March 14 letter from Dr. Paula A Vanderford, executive secretary of the Commission on School Accreditation, to YCMSD Superintendent Dr. Arthur Cartlidge and former school board President Robert Green, Vanderford said the school district “appears to be in violation of” an accreditation policy and 24 of 30 process standards.

Residents ask city to reconsider proposal

Although city officials won’t vote on the proposed ordinance change until the April 8 meeting, a small group of citizens urged the Mayor and Board of Aldermen Monday to reconsider their position.
During a work session last week the board elected to consider extending the operating hours of city night clubs by 30 minutes until 2 a.m. Alcohol sales would still have to cease at midnight, and the new rules would require the property to be completely vacated at closing time.

Ninth annual Jerry Clower Festival set for May 4

The Jerry Clower Festival returns to downtown Yazoo City on May 4 for a day of family fun and music.
This year’s format will be a little different in response to what has attracted the largest crowds over the course of the festival’s nine-year history.
The music begins at 10 a.m. with local artist Joe Smith and his band.
At 10:30 a.m. the Kinsmen and the Runnells Family will perform gospel favorites.
Southern Halo will perform from 11 a.m.-noon.
Miles Flatt of Cleveland will perform from noon-1 p.m.
Dialogue, a Chicago cover band from Jackson will perform from 1-2.
