Audit also finds issues with city school facilities

By VERNON SIKES
Herald Correspondent

Last October's audit of the Yazoo City Municipal School painted a dismal picture of the conditions of some of the schools in which Yazoo City's students spend most of their waking hours. Only one school, McCoy Elementary School, which is the district's newest school, earned words of praise.
“McCoy Elementary is a relatively new school and has been well taken care of,” wrote Ennis Proctor, the Mississippi State Department of Education official who evaluated all the district's physical plants. “There were very few areas that needed attention.

A habitual offender is back behind bars after a routine traffic stop led to the discovery of drugs.
Jimmie Simmons, 31, of Yazoo City, was charged with felony possession of marijuana, no driver’s license, no insurance and no seatbelt last week.
Maj. Tilmon Clifton said Simmons was the driver of a vehicle that was stopped by officers on Maynie Avenue.
“A felony amount of drugs were found inside his vehicle,” Clifton said. “Upon further investigation, we were able to obtain a search warrant for Simmons’ house.”
Simmons has several residences listed on his record, but a warrant was issued for 126 Summerhaven Dr.
“A felony amount of marijuana was recovered from the home,” Clifton said.
Simmons has a lengthy record with the police department.
“He was just arrested for similar charges not too long ago,” Clifton said. “He was out on bond from those felony charges when he was arrested this time.”
Simmons remained in jail as of press time. He was not eligible for bond.

State education officials will meet Thursday to take action on a recommendation to downgrade Yazoo City Municipal School District's accreditation status from “accredited” to “probation.”
According to a March 14 letter to city school officials from Dr. Paula A. Vanderford, executive secretary of the Mississippi Commission on School Accreditation, the recommendation is based on the findings of a three-day unannounced, on-site visit last October.

Banks’ second chance at life

By JAMIE PATTERSON

Tamica Banks understands the importance of second chances.
When one surgery uncovered the early arrival of cancer cells, she knew she had been given another chance by God to fulfill her purpose.
“I have been given a second chance at life,” she said, with a smile. “We all don’t get that second chance, but God has something left for me to do.”
