With only two individuals in the audience, the Yazoo County School Board hosted their 2012-2013 public budget hearing Tuesday evening.
As explained by Superintendent Becky Fisher, the district has projected that the 2012-13 school year's total expenditures of $17,383,064.13 will exceed the total revenues of $17,020,834.08 by $362,230.05.

If it would have happened in any of the previous few days, heavy rainfall would have been on their side.
But instead Yazoo City firefighters had hot weather against them as they battled a blaze in a residence on Grand Avenue Monday.
“Heat exhaustion is a factor on days like this,” said Fire Chief Roy Wilson. “We keep plenty of drinking water on the trucks and just try to watch out for each other.”
It’s hot enough inside a smoldering home, but the heavy gear required to survive those conditions makes it much worse. Exhausted firefighters quickly removed their masks and heavy jackets after emerging from the home.

The heavy rainfall didn’t damper the spirits of those who gathered for Relay for Life  last Friday night in Yazoo City.
About 200 people arrived at the Wardell Leach Recreational Complex, ready to show their support in honor of loved ones or for those who have survived or continue to battle cancer.
There was a feeling of hope and courage among the crowd as the sun seemed to appear behind the rain clouds with teams and other supporters arriving for the family-friendly event.
“The rain did keep some people away,” said Pamela Shanks, event coordinator. “But it ended up being a beautiful evening.”

From dining room etiquette to lifesaving techniques, many of Yazoo’s young ladies have it covered thanks to the annual Camp Magnificent Me.
Sponsored by the Junior Auxiliary of Yazoo City, the three-day camp provides a variety of exercises and training workshops centered  around etiquette and healthy lifestyles for young girls.
About 20 girls participated in the camp this year, and many community leaders joined in this year’s efforts to educate them on a variety of topics.
“This was the largest class I have seen during my time with Junior Auxiliary,” said Brittany Ketchum, JA member and camp chairman. “It was refreshing to see so many young girls excited about our workshops and activities. It was fun, but they also took away some life lessons that we hope remain with them.”
JA members and volunteers from the community spent the past few mornings in a variety of workshops from CPR training to a dining etiquette course, concluding with a brunch.
“We had a variety of exercises this year,” Ketchum said. “It covered a wide range of topics that taught the girls how to behave in social situations, how to show respect and practicing consideration with others.”

City schools may increase taxes again

By JAMIE PATTERSON
Managing Editor

The Yazoo City School District is considering requesting a 4.75 millage tax increase in a budget hearing that will be held in two weeks.
The meeting between the city school board and the Mayor and Board of Aldermen will be held on July 30 at 1 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
Many city officials are predicting a tax increase with the anticipation of the school board’s request that was similar to last year’s budget.
Last year, school officials requested a 4.75 millage increase. That same request could be made during the budget hearing this month, which will mean more money from the taxpayers.
The millage rate could increase from 48.19 to 52.94 if the 4.75 millage increase occurs.
“If the schools come back with that request, the city council will have to accept it,” said Mayor McArthur Straughter.
