Unconscious man struck and killed in highway

Investigators say driver not at fault in fatal incident

Investigators believe a Bentonia man was lying unconscious in the highway after a fight when he was fatally struck by a vehicle.
Lawrence Howard Swinney, 25, died after being ran over by a westbound SUV on Miss. Highway 433 Friday. Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said Swinney’s body was discovered around 9:30 p.m., and he had suffered multiple serious injuries.

The kids were expecting a movie star, a big Hollywood actor.
They were eager for autographs, stories of movie sets.
Anxiously awaiting his arrival, the teenagers began to share stories of him as they sat alone in the room at the Triangle Cultural Center.
It’s not every day that someone famous comes to Yazoo City.
But minutes after Coach Ken Carter entered the room, he made it clear to the teenagers that he wasn’t there to talk about himself. He was there to help them make something of themselves.

School officials say they don’t want tax hike

Trustees call newspaper’s coverage of budget proposals “yellow journalism”

“We have not asked for an increase (in funding from the city),” said Dr. Arthur Cartlidge, superintendent of the Yazoo City Municipal School District, Thursday during the July school board meeting as the discussion turned to the district's budget.
“We simply presented a proposal to the mayor,” Cartlidge said. “In that proposal, it did talk about what it would take to do what we want to do. However, there was no approval for us to ask for an increase, and at this point in time, we have not asked for an increase.”

Redistricting plans for city considered

City leaders are planning to make a few changes to the redistricting plan designed by the Central Mississipi Planning and Development District.
The proposal was submitted to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen during its open meeting Monday afternoon. Based on the 2010 census report, the state agency modified the city’s current ward lines to balance out populations and demographics.
Yazoo City has a population of 11,403 based on the 2010 census.
“The ideal population per ward is 2,851,” said David Wade, with CMPDD. “Most of your population changes took place in the central area (of the city).

Superintendent says test scores are unacceptable

Dr. Arthur Cartlidge, superintendent of the Yazoo City Municipal School District, said last school year's state testing scores are in, but they are far from good.
“Point blank, we didn't make the grade,” he said. “It's just that simple. I make no excuses for it.”
Cartlidge said the scores are currently embargoed.
