A jury found a Yazoo  man accused of capital murder not guilty Thursday.
Ronnell Carson, 21, was first charged with murder in March of 2010 after he was linked to the shooting of Benjamin Reed, 25.
Reed’s body was discovered in a field near West Second Street  with a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.
Following a brief chase from authorities, Carson was arrested shortly after the murder.
Carson’s defense was that he accidentally shot Reed. No other information was available by press time.

Compromise reached on school budget

By JAMIE PATTERSON
Managing Editor

After weeks of discussion, city and school officials seem to have reached a compromise with the school district’s upcoming budget.
But it will likely require a tax increase.
During a special called meeting with the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, city leaders agreed to accept the school district’s latest proposal. With a $200,000 cap on the school district receiving free utilities, the proposed budget could mean a 1.9 millage increase.

By VERNON SIKES
Herald Correspondent

Yazoo City school officials are scratching their heads over what to do about the district's high absentee rate.
During the 2011-2012 school year, there were 31,009 absences recorded in the district. With 2,650 students enrolled in the district last year, that averages out to 12 absences for each student.
“This is unprecedented,” said Jana Bardwell, who serves as the district's curriculum, testing and professional development director.
