City seeks to address Shady Lane complaints

The mold problem at Shady Lane Apartment Complex was revisited during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting this week.
The Yazoo Herald published an article last week about the black mold problem at the local apartment complex that some tenants say has not been addressed since it was first discovered a year ago.
Cobie Collins, president of the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors, appeared before the city board Monday afternoon requesting research into what can be done for the residents living inside the mold-infested apartment units.

Public hearings set on city and county tax hikes

Tax increases are in store for both city and county residents under current budget proposals.
Citizens will have an opportunity to comment on those plans during the first week of September.
Yazoo County plans to increase the ad valorem tax millage rate by 2.9 mills with an additional increase of .88 mills for the Yazoo County School District for a total of 3.78 mills.
The county currently operates on a budget with a projected revenue of $14,246,683 with 63.48 percent (9,750,940) of that revenue coming from ad valorem taxes.  For the next fiscal year, Yazoo County has proposed a budget with projected revenue of $15,016,038. Of that amount, 64.93 percent ($9,750,940) would come from ad valorem taxes.  (More details are available on page 14).

Talented Benton seamstress dies

Mrs. Margaret “Bay Bay” Rembert was a talented seamstress, successful gardner, friendly hairdresser, dedicated church member and wonderful provider.
But most importantly, she was just a good person.
The Benton resident who was known throughout the community as a peaceful lady who cared more for others than herself died last Saturday at the age of 70 after a battle with breast cancer.

Suspect arrested in knife robbery

A Yazoo City man remains behind bars after he tried to rob a store clerk at knife point.
Dandre Taylor, 19, of 1075 Davis Rd., was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, attempted robbery and kidnapping.
The attempted robbery occurred a few weeks ago at the T & S Tobacco Shop on Jerry Clower Boulevard. A suspect assaulted a store employee as she was taking the trash out behind the store.  After demanding money from the cash register, the victim and suspect struggled.
