City leaders were uneasy about striking an agreement with Chancery Clerk Quint Carver concerning the collection of delinquent taxes.
Carver appeared before the Board of Mayor and Aldermen during its opening meeting Monday afternoon to request possible compensation from the city for his office’s work with delinquent taxes.
Carver said he is adjusting to recent budget cuts within the chancery clerk’s office.
“The county went to a situation where they reduced my budget,” Carver said. “A big part of my budget elimination was delinquent taxes that I collect.”
The chancery clerk’s office operates on the fees that come through its doors.
Although there were cuts, Carver said he still has to collect those delinquent taxes.
“A large portion of those taxes is within the city,” Carver said.
