Santa returning to Main Street

By JAMIE PATTERSON

Santa Claus will be returning to the end of Main Street this year.
Many residents were feeling like the Grinch had paid a visit to Main Street after hearing that the Yazoo icon would not be making his annual appearance at the end of Main Street. The rotted poles that have held the wooden Santa up for years were deemed incapable of supporting Santa this year.

“Where you start is not nearly as important as where you finish.”
- Zig Ziglar
Once a poor boy in Yazoo City, he went on to become the Master of Motivation.
Zig Ziglar, America’s best known motivational speaker and author of over two dozen books, died Wednesday morning at age 86 in Dallas, Texas after a brief battle with pneumonia.
Born Hillary Hinton Ziglar in Coffee County, Ala., Ziglar moved to Yazoo City with his family at a young age. Ziglar was the tenth of 12 children, and his father died when he was just five years old. One of his younger sisters died just two days later.
At age 6, the first grader was selling peanuts on the streets of Yazoo City. During the Great Depression, Ziglar and his brothers served as carriers for The Yazoo Herald.

Jayne Dew made history Tuesday night as she became the first female elected supervisor in Yazoo County.
Dew defeated David Shipp 566-454 in a runoff election to fill the seat that her late husband, Ed Dew, occupied for 20 years until he died in February.
“Someone mentioned that I had made history by being the first woman elected supervisor, and I had forgotten about that,” she said. “I don’t think it has sunk in yet.”

Alderman says after hour cemetery fees are too high

By JAMIE PATTERSON
Managing Editor

A city alderman feels the after hour fees of Glenwood Cemetery need adjustments to better suit grieving families.
Ward 3 Alderman Clifton Jones said it is not fair to charge families $125 more after 3 p.m. or on the weekends for burial at the local cemetery.
It currently costs $375 for funerals before 3 p.m. on weekdays. That cost increases to $500 for services after 3 p.m. or on weekends.
