Harris rides to the top

With national recognition and several honors within the equine circuit, Christy Harris is quick to give all the credit to her beloved horse.
“She is the real star,” she said, looking over photographs of her beautiful Palomino.
Especially now that the duo have earned more bragging rights, Harris feels like the two were meant to be together.
“I was just in the right place, at the right time,” she said.
Harris and her horse, Hollywood Strip Girl, recently won the Novice amateur reining title at the 2012 Nutrena AQHA East Novice Championship in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Mixed with challenges and accomplishments, the journey has been an eventful ride for the Vaughan native. But she and Hollywood Strip Girl remained steady and determined through it all.

Mood to lead economic development

Yazoo County native Tim Mood has been named interim director of the Yazoo County Economic Development District.
Henry Cote resigned as director Friday to pursue new opportunities.
“We thank Henry for his services and wish him well,” said Cobie Collins, president of the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors. “We are very excited to have Tim aboard as I am confident that he has the skills to help us bring our economic development efforts to the next level.”

City to form new Triangle Board

City leaders feel they are sometimes left in the dark when it comes to operations at the Triangle Cultural Center since its board disbanded.
K.K. Hill, director of the Triangle, provides the Board of Mayor and Aldermen updates on the local facility. However, the board that the city leaders established hasn’t functioned as such in several months.
“There is a lot going on down there that we don’t know,” said Ward 2 Alderman Dr. Jack Varner. “There is a lot going on down there that we wouldn’t like if we did know.”

Brent says it’s time to clean up leaves

One city alderman said he is tired of the streets of Yazoo City being neglected with giant piles of leaves and other debris.
Ward 4 Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. discussed the matter with street supervisor Danny Miller during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting this week.
Brent commended Miller for always being ready to answer any call, but he felt the curbside service of the street department needs improvement.

Miranda Purvis will be celebrating 20 years at Ricks Memorial Library next week.
The Yazoo native has seen her share of changes while working at the local library for the past two decades. But the love for her hometown and giving back to the community through her job has remained steady over the years.
“We have a unique community here,” she said. “You have to love it to stay here. I was born and raised here, and I am not going anywhere.”
Purvis joined the library staff on Dec. 16, 1993.
