Scouting is more than just a tradition in the Jones family.
It is a way of life that has helped shape three generations.
“It is about service and placing good qualities in a young man that will help him succeed in life,” said Lonnie Jones, who has been involved with Boy Scouts since the early 1960s. “It can put you on the right course and change your life.”
The family has also joined forces with others in the community to spread the word about the importance of scouting among local youth.
But for the Jones family, it all began when Lonnie joined a troop in Prentiss. Leader Jerry Wilson gave his time and effort to the cause, and he helped Lonnie during his journey into the program.
Lonnie said he enjoyed his time in scouting when he was younger. From summer camps to outdoor adventures, he dove right into the organization.

SheriffSheriffBy JASON PATTERSON

As many people travel during the holiday season burglars often try to take advantage of the situation.
Sheriff Jake Sheriff said the holiday season always brings in increased burglary activity, and this year is no exception. Incidents have been reported around the county, and Sheriff is urging residents to look out for their neighbors.
“Neighbors looking out for each other is the most effective way to prevent crime,” Sheriff said. “The most important thing is to report any suspicious activity. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Mayor says parkway construction finally in sight

By JASON PATTERSON
Editor & Publisher

The Willie Morris Parkway will feature some of the nicest streets in Yazoo County, but the road to construction has been filled with bumps and potholes.
The parkway has been hailed as the key to the most significant development opportunities for Yazoo City in decades, but the project has dragged on for so long that some wonder if it will ever really happen.
Mayor McArthur Straughter said a project of this size takes time, but he is convinced it will be well worth the wait.
“This project has been in the works since I took office,” Straughter said. “The pace has been frustratingly slow at times, but this is going to be a great thing for Yazoo City.”

Roaming author settles in the Delta

Author Richard Grant has roamed the world and written about his experiences, but these days he feels at home in the Mississippi Delta.Author Richard Grant has roamed the world and written about his experiences, but these days he feels at home in the Mississippi Delta.By VERNON SIKES

The elements seem to work together.
Thousands of acres of freshly plowed Delta fields, mile after mile of roads that lay flat and wind around a lake that looks more like a river, the crisp fall morning, the generations-old home that once belonged to a family of considerable standing … and Savannah, the shepherd mix who apparently never meets a stranger and possesses the hospitality of a true Southern gentleman.
A truly fertile climate for literary genius. A perfect place for avowed nomad and writer Richard Grant.
