Henrine Carter taught for over 50 years

Until the time she retired, Mrs. Henrine Carter probably never met a student she didn’t know.
If she didn’t know a student, then there was a pretty good chance that she knew their family.
With 50 years of teaching under her belt, Mrs. Carter saw generations of Yazooans enter into her classroom. And she was the type of teacher who was never ready to see them go.
From 1931 until 1981, Mrs. Carter served the community she loved by educating thousands of children.
With a career that spanned over two decades, many teachers would be ready to retire and take it easy.
But Mrs. Carter decided to take a different route and continue her profession until she was 67 years old.

Mobile home left in street

A Yazoo City man said a mobile home was abandoned in the middle of his street last year, and he is ready to get it out of there.
Cedric Gainwell appeared before the Board of Mayor and Aldermen this week with photographs of a unoccupied mobile home that was left parked on Bennett Street last June.
Gainwell said he has contacted several officials but has seen no results.

Jones: Jerry Clower Boulevard needs new businesses, not homes

One city alderman says it’s time to bring in new jobs to local business districts, not more housing.
During a discussion involving commercial districts at the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, Alderman Clifton Jones said he would not approve special exceptions for new houses along Jerry Clower Boulevard.

Former county administrator Gerald Glascoe dies

Former County Administrator Gerald Glascoe died Monday at age 75.
In addition to his work for the county, Glascoe and his wife Rosalyn are best known for their work in the recovery effort following the 2010 tornado.
The Glascoes earned valuable experience during two years of volunteer service on the Gulf Coast helping rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. They put that experience to work at home when the community was devastated by the storm of April 24, 2010.
