Half of YCHS senior class not likely to graduate

Around 50 percent of the senior class at Yazoo City High School are not likely to graduate this year.
According to Cynthia Johnson Walker, who spoke to the school board Thursday, in spite of the likelihood of failure, the 80-plus seniors who are in academic trouble, have not been taking advantage of the scheduled Saturday tutoring sessions that have been conducted at Yazoo City High School.
There are 164 students in the 2013 senior class.

Anyone wondering how they can do something good for their community need look no further than the example set by third grader Jacob Scott.
The Manchester Academy student recently organized a canned food drive for the Manna House, a ministry that feeds the hungry in Yazoo City.
“It just came to me,” he said. “I was sitting in my room and thinking that I wanted to do something to help others.”
Marilyn Myers, Scott’s teacher, said it didn’t surprise her to see him thinking of others.

A Flora man was killed in an automobile accident early Tuesday morning near Mile Hill on U.S. Highway 49.
Ronnie Sadler Renicker, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene inside the back of the ambulance.
Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said Renicker died from closed chest injuries.

Escaped inmate still on the run

An inmate who escaped from the Yazoo County Correctional Facility Friday remains at large.
Eric Williams, 24, escaped sometime during the night. He was in jail on grand larceny and escape charges. He kicked the window out of a patrol car and briefly escaped when he was arrested.
