Angela Hudson, federal programs director for the Yazoo County School District, told board members Tuesday that the district will experience a federal funding cut for the year.
“This year we're going to have a pretty good cut, it looks like,” Hudson said. “We were basing on our preliminary allocations for the FY14 school year off of 85 percent of what we got last year. We're pretty much thinking we're not going to get what we got last year.”
According to figures on a handout distributed during the meeting, with this year's Title I federal allocation of $1,066,885, the FY14 allocation will be $906,852, which is 85 percent of the FY13 allocation. Of that amount, $716,413 will be allocated for free and reduced price lunches, $181,370 for administration and $9,069 for parental involvement.

The highways within Yazoo County were lined with workers Wednesday in an effort to beautify the community.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation held its annual Trash Bash event with hundreds of workers picking up trash and litter from the highways.
It marks the 23rd year for the MDOT District Three program. Yazoo County was among 11 counties in the state to participate in the event.

Yazoo County native Gene Harlan Powell will sign copies of his book, Fisher of Men: The Motorcycle Ministry of Herb Shreve, Saturday at Downtown Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. By JAMIE PATTERSON

When Yazoo native Gene Harlan Powell traveled with Herb Shreve on the highways and byways of America, he didn’t see the legendary biker by his side.
Herb was considered famous, maybe even a celebrity,  with the establishment of the global Christian Motorcyclists Association. Leaving home with $17 and his wife’s blessing, Shreve’s call led to a global ministry in all 50 states and 30 countries worldwide.
Powell knew him as a lifelong friend who enjoyed freedom and sharing the Good News with complete strangers, vagabonds and others. And he was a man who would stop anywhere for a hot plate of fried chicken.
“The guy I rode with was plain Herb,” Powell said.
Powell has documented Shreve’s journey with his new book, Fisher of Men: The Motorcycle Ministry of Herb Shreve.

District 1 Supervisor Caleb Rivers plans to sell his county-issued truck and use the proceeds to help pay for repairing Bill Walker Road.
Rivers’ made a motion to have the truck declared surplus and sold to the highest bidder following a heated discussion about the condition of the road and whether or not $30,000 paid by the company that caused much of the damage is being properly spent.
