City schools face budget challenges

By VERNON SIKES
Herald Correspondent

As board members discussed budget preparations for the next school year, Superintendent Dr. Arthur Cartlidge pointed to a neglected item that calls for major funding.
“Everything we have is old,” Cartlidge said as the discussion dealt with repairs. “You're talking about a roof here (on the central office building) and the high school. That's $2 million by itself. It's not found (in the proposed budget).”

Staples questions school board decisions

StaplesStaplesBy VERNON SIKES
Herald Correspondent

During the public comments section of the Yazoo City Municipal School District's school board meeting last Friday, retired educator Johnny Staples angered at least one school board member who wanted to but was denied permission to respond to Staples' comments.
The only thing Trustee Truvander Kennedy was able to say following Staples' five-minute speech was, “Does anyone know what 'insanity' is?” as other officials said any further response from her would be inappropriate. Prior to Kennedy's remarks, Staples had placed the blame for the community's troubles on past city school boards.

By JASON PATTERSON
Editor & Publisher

Clark Carter has been named Yazoo County’s road manager.
Carter was appointed Monday by the Board of Supervisors to replace Owen Graves, who recently retired.
District 1 Supervisor Caleb Rivers cast the sole vote against hiring Carter.
“It’s nothing against him,” Rivers said after the vote.
Rivers later explained that he thinks the county should have done a more thorough job of searching for the most qualified candidate for such an important position.
