Pray Yazoo set for Sunday

The upcoming Pray Yazoo program will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Yazoo City Church of God.
This will be the first time for the local church, located at 315 W. 15th St., to host the annual community-wide event.
“We are excited and honored to be the host church,” said Rev. Charles Runnels, church pastor. “We are looking forward to a good day, and we are hoping for a great turnout from the whole community.”

Stolen car victim takes matters into her own hands

A Yazoo City woman was able to locate her stolen vehicle within 48 hours and less than a mile away from her home.
Frustrated, she is left with many questions as she tries to understand how the local police department was unable to do the same.
“It was so easy to find my vehicle within two days less than a half a mile from my home where it was stolen,” she said. “It wasn’t like I dug around with a fine tooth comb. But where were they?”
The victim said she reported her vehicle stolen early Saturday morning after she discovered it missing from her driveway. She admits that she accidentally left her keys inside the vehicle.

YCHS graduation rate better than feared

Three months ago, it appeared that 85 seniors at Yazoo City High School, or 51 percent of the class, would not graduate this year due to low scores on state tests. But when the class marched during graduation exercises recently, that percentage had been reduced to just 24 percent.

Gov. Haley Barbour is all smiles as he welcomes a crowd of friends and supporters to the dedication of the room named in his honor at the Sam. B. Olden Yazoo Historical Society Museum. The grand opening was held Thursday evening inside the Triangle Cultural Center. The ceremony was sponsored by the Yazoo Historical Society, who were behind the completion of the room filled with a collection surrounding Barbour’s life and career.Gov. City leaders look to auction over 2,000 weapons

With over a thousand confiscated firearms in the police department’s possession, city leaders are looking into auctioning off some of the surplus weapons.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen are also considering placing their surplus pieces of equipment and vehicles on the auctioning block.
Roland Cuevas, with Cuevas Auction LLC, met with the city board last week about offering his services.
Cuevas, who is also a licensed gun dealer, said he  could auction the firearms off with all the necessary background checks.
