A gift for Guatemala

For The Herald

Bringing power to others, especially in remote areas of the world, doesn’t happen overnight.
It takes time, resources and a few helping hands to “flip the light switch.”
Yazoo Valley Electric’s Jay Milner eagerly lent his hands.
In February of 2013, Milner, along with several other linemen from electric power associations across Mississippi headed south for a 2,000 mile journey. They traveled to Guatemala to take part in an effort to help bring electricity to small rural communities outside of the town of Jalapa. The area is about 100 miles from the Capital, Guatemala City.
Milner was slightly nervous about his visit to another country, but those feelings quickly passed when he realized he was among colleagues.

City addresses night club issues

By JAMIE PATTERSON
Managing Editor

Hours of operation, proper security and a harsh warning were part of the discussion this week concerning nightclubs and pool halls within the city, particularly those located on Broadway.
The owners of two nightclubs and a pool hall spoke with the Board of Mayor and Aldermen during its open meeting this week.
A few of the owners seemed willing to work with the city leaders about recent concerns over the nightclub’s late hours and unruly outside crowd. But  there were a couple owners who were visibly frustrated with the request.
Ward 4 Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. asked that the owners of Mickey and Bobby’s Lounge, The Club of Love and JR’s Pool Hall come before the board to address the concerns of surrounding business owners and residents.

Prison guard arrested

By JAMIE PATTERSON

A jail guard was arrested this week after he allegedly smuggled contraband into the local regional jail.
Thomas C. Jew, of Tchula, was charged with smuggling contraband into the Yazoo County Regional Facility on June 4.
Chief Investigator Tommy Irvine, with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said the arrest was made in a recent attempt to deter jail smuggling.
“In an effort to curve the flow of contraband going in and out of the jail, the warden instructed some guards to do a pat down of employees coming into work that morning,” Irvine said. “A hard object was found on (Jew).”
