A Walking Miracle

Benton Academy sophomore Jack Robinson serves as an inspiration to his fellow students and his teachers. Benton Academy sophomore Jack Robinson serves as an inspiration to his fellow students and his teachers. By JAMIE PATTERSON

The tiny newborn was put aside as the doctor explained to his mother that he didn’t make it.
Arriving four months earlier than expected, the baby could fit inside the palm of a hand.
There was no movement, no hope.
That was until his mother asked to see him one more time. Twenty minutes later, the nurses took the baby for a bath so that he could be cleaned for one last moment with his mother.
As they placed the child into the water, he began to cry. It was a miracle.
Jack Robinson was that miracle.
Today the 18-year-old Benton Academy sophomore serves as an inspiration to everyone he meets. Humorous and driven, he had already left a mark on so many others in his short life – a life that almost never happened.
“God just planned for him to be here,” said Shawn McCoy, Jack’s aunt.
Jack’s journey began on October 16, 1993. It was his grandmother’s birthday. His aunt Shawn was at an Ole Miss game.
Jack’s mother went into labor four months early. He wasn’t supposed to arrive until February.

A group of local ministers believe what Yazoo needs more than anything is the power of prayer.
On Sunday they’re offering that opportunity, and they hope like-minded Yazooans will join them.
“I feel that the timing is right for this,” said Rev. George Woodliff, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church. “There is a great need for this community to come together in prayer.”
The Yazoo Ministerial Association is sponsoring Pray Yazoo 2012, a series of four prayer and praise events. The first of those will be Sunday at First Baptist Church at 4 p.m. with Woodliff officiating.

A 73-year-old man was killed Saturday morning after the truck he was driving was struck by a train.
Hubert Lee Cole was crossing the tracks at Grand Avenue near Clubview Circle onto Jerry Clower Boulevard at 9:55 a.m. when he was struck by a southbound Amtrak passenger train.
Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said Cole was killed instantly. None of the 155 passengers aboard the train were injured. The train was heading for New Orleans from Chicago. The passengers were taken to their final destination by bus.
The train pushed Cole’s truck about 1,300 feet before stopping. Rescue workers pronounced Cole dead on the scene. The truck caught fire as they attempted to work.

When Yvette Edwards Cook was only eight years old, she thought her one shot at tennis was over.
It was her first lesson, and she was eager to leave her racquet on the court.
“I told my mother that I didn’t want to ever play again,” Cook said. “I put the racquet down and never looked back.”
But her instructor that day saw something in Cook. There was a talent.
“He told my mother, ‘do everything you can to keep her in it,’” Cook said. “He said, ‘she has talent.’”
Cook walked back onto the court a few years later at 11 years old. A year later, she played in her first tennis tournament.
